State-by-state
Trademark search, state by state
A US trademark registered with the USPTO is federal — one filing protects your name nationwide, not just in your home state. Most states also run their own, separate state-level trademark register through their Secretary of State (or equivalent agency), which covers a narrower, in-state footprint. Pick your state below to see how the two interact.
Federal vs. state, in short: federal (USPTO) registration gives nationwide rights and is almost always the stronger option for any business selling across state lines or online. State registration is typically faster and cheaper, but only protects you within that state — useful mainly for a purely local business, or as a bridge before a federal filing based on intent to use.
